The best Harry Potter RPG, now on Xbox One

Hogwarts Legacy is an action-adventure open-world RPG set in the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. Developed by Portkey Games and Avalanche Software, this bewitching videogame will set you on a thrilling and magical experience like none you’ve ever seen before. Packed with quests and secrets to discover, Hogwarts Legacy lands on the Xbox One bringing an engaging story, huge world to explore and thrilling combat system that will take you from the well-known School of Witchcraft and Wizardry to the depths of Azkaban. With huge respect to the source material and depicting J.K Rowling’s world in full detail, Hogwarts Legacy is considered by many the best Harry Potter game ever created. Do you want to know why?

Story: Become Hogwarts Chosen One

Hogwarts Legacy is the perfect game for Harry Potter fans and those new to the Wizarding World since it’s not directly connected to the main books of the series. In fact, the game takes place in the late 1800’s, 100 years before the birth of The Boy Who Lived and his fight against evil Lord Voldermort. Here we’ll take the role of a new Hogwarts’ Student that will be admitted to the school during the fifth year. While this has happened a few times in the past, it’s a very uncommon event that already foresees our witch or wizard is meant to do great things.

Through the opening tutorial we’ll learn that we’re able to see things that others can’t thanks to some mysterious power called  “Ancient Magic ''. This ability lets us traverse through special invisible doors and follow trails set by other users in the past. Our arrival to Hogwarts won’t be normal either so don’t expect a peaceful ride on the Hogwarts Express. After that, our studies will begin, as well as an adventure to search for answers surrounding our power and uncover the truth behind a mystery vault at Gringott’s.

Gameplay: A magical open-world to explore

Hogwarts Legacy is the first open-world game based in the magical world of Harry Potter. After the opening of the game we’ll slowly gain access to the different sections of the famous school of Witchcraft and Wizardry and its surrounding areas. Yes, you read correctly. You won’t just have access to the humongous school grounds but also all the nearby locations that are well known to Harry Potter fans. You’ll be able to explore the Forbidden Forest (be careful with its spiders), go to Hogsmeade to visit Zonko’s Joke Shop and even face some dementors while you explore the dangerous Azkaban. All of these places have been recreated with utter care and following the books’ descriptions, being a real delight to all of us who grew up reading J.K Rowling’s work.

The world of Hogwarts Legacy isn’t just big and detailed, it’s also full of things to do. You’ll unlock hundreds of quests to complete and keep you entertained for hours. Some of these will advance the main story, but most of them will be tied to school assignments, to help people in need or simply to bond and get to know our schoolmates better. The good news is that most of these quests will be unique and follow a story, so say goodbye to the classic Ubisoft-style fetch-quests seen in games like Assassin’s Creed. And best of all, they aren’t timed, so you won’t be forced to complete them within a time limit. The game will always let you explore all its secrets and have fun at your own pace.

Scattered around the world you’ll also find hundreds of puzzles to solve. While these can’t be considered quests on their own, they will grant you plenty of collectibles as well as new equipment and clothing for your character. These are also a great way to earn XP and money. Simply use Revelio around Hogwarts and you’ll likely find new riddles and puzzles that will keep you entertained for hours and hours. These collectables can be used and displayed in the Room of Requirement, your own customizable central hub where you can keep your pet beasts, grow your own plants and even brew your potions.

If you’re wondering about the size of the map, fret not because there is lots to see in Hogwarts Legacy. The game’s world is in fact so big that you’ll need a broom or a hypogriff to go from side to side without spending hours walking. Yes, you’ll be able to have your own Nimbus 2000 and, while there won’t be Quidditch, you’ll be able to fly your way through the game’s amazing landscapes. If you’re looking for an open-world game as deep as the one in The Witcher 3 or Red Dead Redemption 2, we can happily say Hogwarts Legacy won’t disappoint.

Create your own witch or wizard

Hogwarts Legacy is the first game based on Rowling’s world that doesn’t force us to take the role of Harry Potter. In it, we’ll be able to create our own character and live our own story thanks to its extremely detailed character creation system. You’ll be able to select the skin tone, hairstyle, face shape, eye and hair color, freckles, glasses, moles and even select the gender you feel more comfortable with. This way, if you want, you can create your own trans witch or wizard. While this shouldn’t be a big deal, it’s a strong message the game developers added to the game after months of controversy due to transphobic comments that J.K Rowling shared through her Twitter account.

After creating your character and going through the main tutorial of the game, you’ll also be able to choose which one of Hogwarts' four Houses you want to be in. You can do this either by answering the Sorting Hat’s questions or directly deciding if you want to be a Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw or Slytherin. This choice will decide which will be your common room, uniform colors as well as who your classmates will be, so don’t choose lightly since you won’t be able to change it later.

A fun and challenging combat system

Hogwarts Legacy’s combat can only be described as surprisingly fun. Who could have thought that waving a wand could be as thrilling as fighting villains in Rocksteady’s Batman Arkham series? Whether you’re fighting Ranrok’s henchmen or dueling some random Malfoy, the thrill of its combat and defense spells will trigger heart-racing combos that will leave you wanting more and more. These get even better thanks to the customizable slots in the Xbox One version of the game, letting you access your favorite spells even faster by pressing the right trigger and the button of choice you set.

While knowing your way with combat spells is important (don’t mix up Accio and Incendio!), dodging is also crucial to survive in Hogwarts Legacy. To do so, you’ll have to have good timing. It’ll take you some time to learn to dodge physical attacks or counter spells but believe us that when you do, attacking and dodging in Hogwarts Legacy becomes pure fun.

Graphics: One of the best games on the Xbox One

We can’t review Hogwarts Legacy without mentioning its graphics. While not as stunning as its Xbox Series X counterpart the world of Harry Potter looks beautiful and full of detail, showing the developer’s care and the game’s great art design. Hogwarts marble corridors, its statues or living paintings look simply fantastic. But that’s not all, once you unlock your broomstick you’ll find yourself exploring and discovering new sights that will make you stop for a minute and enjoy the beauty. However, this also translates into longer loading times, but it's completely worth it.

Can you play Quidditch in Hogwarts Legacy?

No, you can’t play Quidditch in Hogwarts Legacy nor are there plans for any DLC that will add it to the game. This is likely due the imminent release of Quidditch Champions, a new game focusing on this sport.

How long is Hogwarts Legacy?

Hogwarts Legacy is about 35 hours long to beat the main story. However, if you aspire to complete 100% of the objectives of the game, you’ll have to spend around 67 hours exploring the vast map of this amazing game.

The game all Harry Potter fans were dreaming of

Hogwarts Legacy is a wonderful game that, for the first time, succeeds at bringing to life the wizarding world of Harry Potter. Bewitchingly beautiful, the Xbox One version of the game offers an engaging story and thrilling gameplay that will please fans of the series and newcomers alike. With thousands of quests, adventures and secrets to discover, it’s definitely a must-play for anyone looking for a solid open-world game.
